Macros is short for macronutrients.
The most important macronutrients are protein, carbohydrates, and fats. These are what make up your calories. When you hear people talking about “tracking macros”, they are tracking how many grams of each macronutrient they are getting.
- Fats have a caloric value of 9 calories per gram.
- Carbohydrates have a caloric value of 4 calories per gram.
- Protein has a caloric value of 4 calories per gram.
I like to encourage people to learn how to accurately track their calorie intake. The easiest way to start is to purchase a food scale. You can find them for under $20 at Walmart.
Learn how to read a nutrition label. You can also Google any food’s nutrition facts. Just remember to make sure you are tracking absolutely everything at first. It can be overwhelming at first, but you are putting the time in now to learn things you’ll use for the rest of your life!
